Sober Brothers was founded when Everette Sober purchased a dump truck prior to World War II. His purpose was to service the work taking place in the Strother Field and the growing areas surrounding Ponca City. His brother, Rolla Sober, joined Everette soon after and they ran that truck day and night. When Everette entered the war effort the decision was made to sell the truck.
When Everette returned home after serving his country, he and Rolla each purchased a truck and began hauling materials for the growing post war Ponca City area. In 1952, their brother Gerald joined the team by purchasing a truck and increasing the fleet. In 1952 they purchased their first sand plant to supply graded sand to the area concrete plants.
In 1955, the company purchased the property on Lake Road and moved the company headquarters from Everette’s porch to a new building. The main office is still operating out of this location. The brothers were not afraid to purchase equipment and hire more employees in an effort to continue to expand the company. They quickly earned the reputation of being problem solvers and were not afraid of taking on very difficult projects. They found the solutions and made their projects move in a timely fashion.
Gerald’s sons, Dick and Tom, began working for the company at an early age, “growing up in the seat of a dump trucks and equipment” Dick and Tom continued working with the company through their high school and college years. In 1977, Rolla retired followed by Everette’s retirement in 1983.
Gerald ran the company with his sons until he retired in 1987. This left Tom and Dick at the reins. In 1996, Dick retired and left this left Tom to run the company while his son, Scott, was attending college. After Scott’s college graduation he joined the company.
In 2019, Scott became president when Tom decided to slow down some but still stay an active part of the company. Scott is looking toward the future of Sober Brothers by embracing new technology and ideas but staying with the principles handed down from the original brothers. The company maintains knowledgeable management and staff with qualified operators. Together with management the focus for Sober Brothers will always be to strive for safety, quality and production in their areas of expertise.
